Love in the time of Covid-19 means a romantic, stay-at-home Valentine’s Day celebration

Raise your 12-inch cast-iron skillet over your head like a boombox ala John Cusack in Say Anything if you are as relieved as I am about not having to go out to dinner for Valentine’s Day this year. I’m not anti-Valentine’s Day, but personally, I would rather have a couple of glasses of red wine over a homecooked meal as I stare sweetly into the crossed eyes of my main meow, Bernard Banks (he is part Siamese). What can I say, I’m an easy cat-lady, and I have a feeling you might just be as easy too.

For some of us, nearly a year of pandemic living means several months of culinary exploration filled with great successes and fails that ultimately have become part of our repertoire to draw from for delicious inspirations. Here is another fine chance to show off your skills and show how much you love and appreciate that special someone or that special family of yours through a spread of thoughtful, localized meal.

Let us help you beeline to the heart of your loved ones through their bellies. Breakfast in Bed
I would love to have all my meals in bed even for just one day out of the year, but I suppose breakfast in bed will do. Consider an easy but decadent cheese omelet with our local eggs, cheese, herbs, and veggies. Don’t forget that cup of Joe!

Kanak Attack Romantic Dinner
You could have steak and potatoes for dinner, but maybe what you really want is a hardy, comfort meal like the Loco Moco. Not fancy enough? When presenting the meal to your favorite diner, replace “gravy” with “béchamel”, “roux”, or “reduction sauce”. Not romantic enough?  Turn the lights down low and light a darn candle. Romance is a state of mind.

Saucy Pasta Dinner
This one’s a classic. Lady and the Tramp your dinner noodles using Onda pasta and a home-made tomato sauce made with local tomatoes and herbs. Find your favorite tomato sauce recipe like this one by Karsten Moran (from NYT Cooking via Seattle Times).
