Indigenous Soap

Love Chance, soap maker and owner of Indigenous Soap with daughter, Coco

I have been head over heels with Indigenous Soap ever since a bar of Rosemary Peppermint that was gifted to me met my skin. Never mind that I was showering while overlooking an emerald green, secluded waterfall in a forgotten village in the northern coast of Maui, a setting that would have made a scampering mouse the most romantic scampering mouse ever. Over a decade later, this memory is still as fresh as the shower I took this morning—and yes, it was with a bar of Rosemary Peppermint. Was it the setting or was it the soap that made a lasting impression? I want to say it was both, but without the soap, which amplifies the nostalgia, that waterfall, in my memory, would have been just a waterfall and that mouse would have been seriously injured.

If this is sounding like an ode to Indigenous Soap, it’s because it truly is. My olfaction and I love Love’s buttery velvet soaps and their heavenly smells. Love Chance is the owner and soap maker behind Indigenous Soap which she started in 2003 here on O‘ahu. Since then, Love has perfected her soap recipes using ingredients that are local and organic as often as possible, and of the highest grade always. Indigenous Soap uses no artificial colors, preservatives, or fragrances.

There are no happenstances in these soaps. Each ingredient, be it laukahi (plantain), kukui nut oil, turmeric, or tea tree oil, is consciously selected for its medicinal properties—a detail which sets Indigenous Soap apart from other soaps. Additionally, each bar is hand-cut, hand-stamped, and hand-wrapped. These extra touches along with Love’s passion for lā‘au lapa‘au (traditional plant medicine practiced by Native Hawaiians) really make these soaps special.

We are proud to offer several scents of Indigenous Soap bars on our marketplace: Love Child, Mama‘o, Tea Tree Patchouli, Ā‘ina, and Rosemary Peppermint. They make delightfully thoughtful, locally made gifts for your favorite people in Hawai‘i or anywhere in the world.
